Has anyone ever applied their own gel color manicure?

I got a gel color manicure once and it lasted for awhile. To buy a gel color manicure kit on amazon is about $100.. I pain my nails all hte time and get annoyed having to redo them almost every other day because of chipping. Has anyone tried doing thier own gel color manicure? Opinions?
